Presented in partnership with Burnaby Art Gallery and Vancouver Art Book Fair.
Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 1:00-4:00pm  |  $32 / $20 (CARFAC BC Members)

Join us for a presentation on independent publishing practices within contemporary art led by artists Erica Wilk (Moniker Press) and Sylvana d'Angelo (Zine Club). From ideation to distribution, gain practical tools to help you share your artistic practice with a wider audience.

This hands-on workshop will cover techniques to produce both digital and physical zines, including image-making and folding demonstrations. Participants will then create their own imagery to be used in the final design of the workshop’s collaborative zine for each to take home. Participants are invited to bring materials to work with (drawings, photographs, etc).

About the presenters:

Sylvana d'Angelo studies the human condition and endeavours to understand culture through superstition and belief. Blurring the lines between what could be real from what is real, her work is a visual study of idealism and the underlying interconnected evolution of progress. Studying photography and then graphic design, her work is informed by both mediums and seeks to distinguish the digital process as a platform for new ideas.

Created to promote long distance collaboration between international design communities Zine Club is a group of designers and artists engaging both print and digital platforms; we experiment with long distance collaboration as a tool to create new visual concepts. Our most resent project Spiritual Pilgrimage is a website and publication derived of images submitted online by participating members of both groups. Images were curated directly from a live folder and feed this site where they are randomly formatted for publication. Print copies of the publication by hitting Command+P and receive three pages in printer spreads. Creating a unique web to print concept. Moniker Press is a risograph publishing studio located in Vancouver, BC that works collaboratively with artists and writers to produce small editions of books, zines and print ephemera. Owner/operator, Erica Wilk, completed her BFA at Emily Carr University in 2011. At the studio she works in many mediums, from collage and bookmaking to video. Since starting in 2014, Moniker Press has evolved from a personal project, to a small risograph print shop, which she uses as a platform for publication, collaboration and experimentation. www.monikerpress.ca
